information : Highly variable from green to smoky black, with abundance of long,
silky pale setae. Most setal clusters with at least 1 very long seta twice the
length of others. Sides usually lighter with yellow, orange, and black pattern.
Setae frequently borne from raised yellow, orange, or black bumps. Spiracles
white. Tents envelop branch tips while those of eastern tent caterpillar confined
to crotches. Caterpillars are generalist feeders on foliage of flowering trees,
including many ornamental species, where they live within silken tents and have
the common name of fall webworm: over 100 forest hardwoods. Caterpillar: May
to October in South where it has 2 or more generations, August to October in
North.
