information : Stocky, gray to brown marked with black and pale, sometimes pinkish,
areas. Dorsum of second thoracic segment slightly humped; venter and sides of
third thoracic segment modestly swollen; raised, arcing ridge on eighth abdominal
dorsum. Head rounded, mottled with black, sometimes with herringbone pattern
to either side of midline. Brownish middorsal line finely edged with black;
faint subdorsal stripes of thin, double black lines; often with dark V on dorsum
of second abdominal segment, dark subspiracular patches, and oblique pale line
extending forward from proleg. Food: many forest trees and shrubs, especially
conifers.Caterpillar: April to October; 2 generations in North.
