The Saturniidae family, silkworm and royal moth families, includes many of the largest eastern forest insects. They have long hairs, horns, armored knobs. Pest species are often gregarious as young caterpillars. Silkworms spin generous cocoons of silk, but of lower quality than those of the commercial Chinese silkworm.
